b'Really bringing home how the world hasaltered, Wayne went over therequirments for working safely in thesechanged times. We had masks for times when socialdistancing could not be maintained anda huge container of sanitiser wasavailable to use when required. Thomastown is an excellent little camp-ing area. There is a deep, very chilly, swimming hole on Shaw Creek, justupstream from the wooden bridge that isthe startof Kelly Lane. Other amenitiesinclude a toilet, a little out of the way atthe top of the hill near the bridge, and apicnic table. Among the trees there aresome good, sheltered campsites. Clubmembers re-oiled the picnic table, mowed the camping areas, used brushcutters on the longer grass, pulledbroken glass, half melted bottles andcans out of fire rings and collected otherscattered rubbish. I do wonder whysome people think bottles and cans willburn away to nothing in a campfire.Cleaning them up is a dirty job forvolunteers and park rangers.McMichaels Hut was the next worksite. We moved there for a socially distancedlunch in the shade of the trees.Fortunately, at nearly 1400 metres abovesea level, the temperature didnt getmuch above 25 degrees. The sound ofthe brush cutters and the mower soondrowned out the gurgling and splashingof Shaw Creek as it tumbled over rocks.Once the clean-up work was completedan old stove and refrigerator wereheaved onto the trailer before all thetools were loaded. I am pleased to reportthat the new mower suffered no damage. Our group headed back to Thomastownwhere some courageous club membersswam in the invigorating pool, whileothers shedwork boots to dangle hotfeet in the cooling water. Our experience proved that clubs caneasily adapt and work within the guide-lines that have been put in place to keepus as volunteers and the Parks Victoriastaff safe from COVID-19. Thanks toWayne Foon and the Parks VictoriaFoothills and Southern Alps team for theirsupport. It was a very good feeling topick up our excellent relationship whereit had been left and add some valuablehours to the Four Wheel Drive Victoriatally of volunteer work.
