Make sure you know the rules around campfires this summer.
Did you know about 10 per cent of all bushfires are caused by campfire negligence.
Campfires must never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished using water, not soil. If you don’t have a purpose-built fireplace to use, you need to dig a 30cm trench for your campfire. Above all, check the weather forecast. If in doubt on a hot day, don't light your campfire.
If you see a campfire that doesn’t look right or is unattended, call 136 186 or dial 000.

On the spot fines of up to $476 can be issued for people breaching campfire safety rules and a person can face a maximum penalty of up to $15,872 if the matter is prosecuted in Court, under the Forest Act 1958.
