It was clearthat, while the sand was nicelycompacted after all the recent wetweather, the undulations, coupledwith our desire to keep the contents ofour vehicles in one piece, meant wewere not going to cover anythingclose to the distance we hoped for,and so we had a brief powwow anddecided to jettison Plan A in favourof taking a shorter route back tocamp. We turned northwest ontoMilmed Rock Track and drove toLookout Dune for lunch. Much to ourhorror, the actual lookout was a 500mundulations to keep the speed down. A short patch of cell reception had me updating our Ground Charlie on hands-free which, it turned out, was sufficient distraction for me to pick the wrong line through one of many bog holes. This provided an opportunity to drag out the winch cable for, what turned out to be, a self-recovery andphoto opportunity.After averaging about twenty kilome-tres per hour on Netting Fence Trackfor about thirty kilometres, we turnednorth onto Chinaman Well track.Another twenty-three kilometres ofsimilarly slow going and we turned12DECEMBER2022 TRACKWATCH'
